It’s the end of another exhausting, exhilarating, fun, and frustrating day. I haven’t blogged in a while, but since today was a milestone day, I thought I should catch up.
So today Sam spent the entire day without his diaper. Pretty cool, right? I was getting sick of him whining about diaper changes, so this morning I told him that if he didn’t want his diaper changes, he could just put on his big boy underwear and be done with it. So he did. The day went pretty smoothly, except I think by the end of the day he was getting sick of the nagging to go and sit on the potty. He did have an accident right before bedtime, but I think he was just too exhausted to remember. That’s not a bad start.
I am glad things are moving along with him, but these milestones always serve as a reminder how quickly time passes. And how little control we really have over any of this. Having a potty-trained kid will be nice, but I admit that I will miss diaper-changing time a little bit. There was something intimate about it — although that was more true when he was a small baby, than a squirmy toddler.
But of course there are other fun things about him now… For example, as he was drinking his milk tonight before bed, he looked at me and said: “Mama, you are a princess.” I am not sure where he learns this stuff, because I never refer to myself as a princess — for real! — but it just cracks me up.
This princess turned 36 a few weeks ago and so I’ve been pondering the ways in which I am getting older. I noticed most of these things when I was out doing my birthday shopping. My choice of shoes: flat, comfy, with a bit of arch support. Undies: cotton, comfy, think Bridget Jones date panties. Birthday dinner: sensitive stomach kaput after one glass of wine. So that’s been the pattern lately. And all of this is making me feel old, but I don’t feel like changing back to uncomfortable shoes or underwear for the sake of feeling young again. Because it really wouldn’t do the trick. Sam is keeping my young — except at the end of the day when I sit and wonder why I am so sore in so many places. Have I mentioned that he is over 40 pounds now? That boy is a moose.
It’s been a busy summer so far. We are spending a lot of time in our mosquito-infested yard splashing in a small pool. I moved Sam’s slide next to the pool, so he has his own water slide. Pretty sweet. I am so not an outdoorsy person, so all of this beach-farm-marsh-yard-going is hard, but I am learning to enjoy it. Also getting used to the fact that I have a boy who likes to touch and squish bugs. Ick.
Trip #3 to Hungary is coming up at the end of the summer — the usual dread and anticipation are all in place as usual. More about that later…
